SpirituaL HeaLinG : I’ll Be There For You
Haitian and Canadian, the multi-instrumentalist Joseph Omicil, Jr., professionally known as Jowee BasH! Omicil, has previously worked with jazz legends such as Nigerian Tony Allen and Americans Roy Hargrove, Pharoah Sanders, and Kenny Garrett, which allowed him to perfect his saxophone skills, initiated in the church where his father was a pastor in Montreal.
“SpiriTuaL HeaLinG” is a ceremony that merges the ancestral power of the Haitian revolution of 1804 with the deep spirit of Ornette Coleman, inhabited by the free black jazz of New York in the 1960s. A true ritual incantation, it transcends traditional musical boundaries, offering a profoundly universal experience of sound and spirituality.
Allowing ample space for improvisation, Jowee Omicil deviates from traditional composed suites. As he himself says, “it’s written in the spirit.” Reflecting Omicil’s Haitian cultural heritage, this project embodies unity, resilience, and freedom in a true “Haitian healing breath.” He drew inspiration from the Bois-Caïman ceremony, the prelude to the first slave revolt that led to the island’s independence.
