The Master Drummers of Burundi
It is in Central Africa, in the Great Lakes region (Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, Uganda), that the most iconic and internationally known African percussion instruments can be found. The royal herders of Burundi are considered the best drummers in the world. The drums of Burundi have thus become the representatives of a festive music where the drum reigns supreme.
On the left, the drums (amashako) keep the continuous rhythm, and on the right, the percussion instruments (ibishikiso) follow the pace set by the central drum (inkiranya). The voices of the acrobat-artists, between breath and scream, accompany the dance around the central drum, which symbolizes power. Their shouts punctuate a symphony of memory, a true call to trance. The ensemble of drums blends both warrior dance and Burundian humor—something that has allowed this troupe to tour globally for decades, including with the Rolling Stones.
