Clément Janinet and Adama Sidibé Concerto for Sokou
In 2020, Clément Janinet traveled to Bamako to meet Adama Sidibé, the last professional sokou player in Mali. Their encounter gave birth to a repertoire—a “concerto for Sokou.”
Clément Janinet, a disciple of Didier Lockwood since the age of fourteen, has made a name for himself with his trio, Les Spaces Galvachers, and has collaborated with various musicians such as Olivier Araste (Lindigo), Lova Lova, Etienne Mbappé, Ray Lema, and Adama Dramé.
Passionate about African and South American music, he explores specific tonal and rhythmic techniques on his violin.
Adama Sidibé began his musical journey at the age of seven with the Djourou Kelen, accompanying his family’s herd on foot from northern Mali to Côte d’Ivoire. He started learning the sokou in his teenage years. This single-string fiddle or viola carries rhythmic speech and spreads it from Mali to Gambia, Burkina Faso to Niger, passing through Senegal and Guinea-Bissau. Once forgotten, this instrument, traditionally played by shepherds, was brought back into the spotlight by the legendary Ali Farka Touré.
