The Zaouli of Manfla
A true celebration of feminine beauty, the traditional Zaouli dance—characterized by a human mask topped with animal figurines—is deeply rooted in ancient animist rituals while also celebrating women in Ivorian society today, particularly among the Gouro communities in the Bouaflé and Zuénoula departments. Refined and elegant, it also carries the identity of its practitioners (artisans, musicians, singers, dancers, or notables as guardians of tradition).
The Stilt Walkers
Like an initiation, stilt walkers or “wooden legs” start young, climbing meter by meter. Once comfortable, more height is added to their stilts, which can reach up to five or six meters. The one with the tallest stilts, a true tightrope walker, is named Afifi.
Traditionally, initiation among stilt-walking families took place in the forest, the origin of stilts, where the afuma (an aerial fern that grows on bamboo) was used to make them. Some stilt-walker movements are also said to mimic forest-dwelling creatures like fairies.
