A new generation of female musicians, devoted to the artistic cause, expresses the continuity of this great historical tradition.
Ancient miniatures and paintings have long attested to the vitality of women’s musical practices, both at the Court and in public life, up until the revival of classical music in the 1850s.
Beyond the free chant ‘âvâz’, traditionally reserved for men and highlighting classical poetry, the ‘tasnif’—a repertoire of composed songs set to specific verses—is more commonly shared by both men and women.
Persian music, with its unique capacity for constant renewal, stands as a singular phenomenon in the East. Rather than merely preserving historical transmission, it prioritizes emotional authenticity. Rooted in its mystical heritage, it retains the essence of a sentiment that evokes nobility and depth of being—a feeling one might define as a form of oriental romanticism, chivalrous and melancholic.
