The Sacred Franco-Flemish Tradition of the Renaissance Inspired by Gregorian Chant through a New Polyphonic Approach

The early music ensemble Zenaida was founded in 2025 by students from the AVES (Advanced Vocal Ensemble Studies) master’s program at the prestigious Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland. Hailing from all corners of the world, the members of the ensemble bring with them a rich mosaic of cultural and musical experiences, united by a deep passion for early music.

In September 2024, under the direction of Björn Schmelzer, Zenaida made its debut at the Erasmus Klingt festival with the program Lamentation, a deeply moving exploration of grief and loss through music inspired by the biblical lamentations of David.

In October 2024, under the direction of Locatelli, the ensemble presented Music for the House of Medici, a captivating program that delved into the secular and sacred musical traditions of 16th-century Florence. As they look beyond their master’s studies, the ensemble remains open to new possibilities, collaborations, and creative explorations, embodying the spirit of connection and discovery that defines their journey.
