Fez and its Festival

A CITY OF ART AND HISTORY

Although busy and hospitable, Fez is reluctant to instantly uncover its secrets. From its hill tops where the Merinid necropolis tombs seem to be slumbering extends a sea of coppery rooftops and fortifications swept across by the light. The fortifcations are there to protect a tangible and intangible heritage requiring time to reveal itself, but of which the traveller is able to guess the dazzling character at a glance. Fez has been, for centuries, the political and intellectual capital of Morocco, it has always remained a center of meeting and excahnge of cultures and knowledge. The many thinkers, scholars, artists, as well as religious men and women, have been welcomed by Fez. For example, history has it that Sylvester II, a Pope from 999 to 1003, studied in Fez dring his youth, before the introduction of Arabic numbers in Europe. During the XII Centuryn Maimonedes, a Jewish doctor and philosopher, taught at Al Qarawyine, which would (now) be the oldest university functioning nowadays. His work is an extraordinary illustration of the Judeo-Islamic symbiosis that prevailed in medieval Andalucia, and of which Fez is an echo.

A UNITING EVENT

The Fes Festival of World Sacred Music and its Forum, created respectively in 1994 and 2001, are deeply rooted in the scholarly, artistic, and spiritual traditions of the city. Since its inception, this event has gained growing success. In 2001, the United Nations recognized the Festival as one of the most significant events contributing to the dialogue of civilizations.

Magnetic and captivating, the event has gathered internationally renowned artists from all over the world, sharing a quest for the sacred. Some of the legendary artists who have graced its stage include: Joan Baez, Patti Smith, Björk, Ben Harper, Paco de Lucía, Ravi Shankar, Sabah Fakhri, Kadhem Saher, Wadi al Safi, Julia Boutros, William Christie, Barbara Hendricks, Jessye Norman, Jordi Savall and Montserrat Figueras, Jean-Claude Casadesus, Archie Shepp, Randy Weston, Youssou N'Dour, Salif Keita, Marcel Khalife, Sami Yusuf, Majda Roumi...

Twenty-seven editions filled with magnificent surprises, as the Festival also serves as an incubator, introducing the audience to emerging talents and supporting bold artistic projects, with exceptional visual and musical performances. In recent years, under the guidance of its Esprit de Fès Foundation, the Festival has initiated large-scale multidisciplinary productions, often featured as opening performances. At times, nearly 90 artists have taken the stage in a single event.

A REVITALIZED  HERITAGE

The diversity of artistic offerings, from prestigious creations to the popular Sufi Nights and the sixty concerts and performances, comes to life in the old city.

The festivities unfold in heritage-rich sites that deserve to be (re)discovered and highlighted: the grand Bab Makina square, once the setting for official royal palace ceremonies, the riads of the medina, explored over three nights of performances – and many other venues.

"THE SPIRIT OF FES" AROUND THE WORLD – Paris, Madrid, Barcelona, London...

The spread of this "Spirit of Fes" continues to radiate across cities worldwide. It inspires the creation of similar events and brings together up to 100,000 residents and travelers each year to celebrate it.

Its message remains profoundly relevant: the dialogue of spiritual traditions through music and the promotion of a culture of peace, fostering a pluralistic globalization that respects ethical and spiritual values.

Thus, the Fes Festival of Sacred Music has become the world's first festival in the realm of sacred music.
