Naghash Ensemble – Armenia
The Naghash Ensemble defies any attempt at categorization, as its music blends styles, geographies, and eras. Three classical lyrical singers, accompanied on duduk, oud, dohol, and piano by outstanding Armenian musicians, bring back to life the poetry of medieval writer and priest Mkrtich Naghash.
The music is distinctly modern. At the heart of the group, composer and pianist John Hodian reinterprets traditional Armenian folk melodies, giving them jazzy colors and sprinkling in harmonies from Western pop culture.
The pieces performed by the Naghash Ensemble exude a powerful spirituality — both in moments of penetrating serenity and in the spectacular flights during which the musicians give themselves completely, in a shared trance.
