Vasumathi BADRINATHAN

India

Vasumathi Badrinathan is one of the most renowned singers of Carnatic music – the sacred music of southern India .

Trained as a singer from an early age, firstly by her mother Padma Seshadri and then by the celebrated music guru T.R. Balamani, Vasumathi has performed for many years both in India and abroad. She often features on All India Radio, also lectures and presents workshops on various much appreciated topics. Vasumathi is faithful to her Indian tradition, but is also keen to innovate, and this gives a richa and intense note to her performances. She is director of the Sivubadra Institute of Indian Art and culture, which she founded to promote Indian arts.

Vasumathi has released four CDs: Tamil Padams and Nayika portray the love songs of Tamil Naidu and Andra Pradesh, rarely performed and at risk of disappearing. Tamil Marai Isai contains the most beautiful verses of musical poetry by the Alwars – saints-philosophers-poets – of Tamil Naidu from the 8 th to 13 th centuries. Swara Dhwani presents songs which are typical of Carnatic music.

Vasumathi has won various awards for her work in the arts, such as the titles of Sur Mani, Singar Mani, Padma Bharati and Padma Kalasagar. She is also an accomplished dancer of the Bharata Natyam classical style of Southern India . One of those rare artists who have mastered both music and dance, Vasumathi lives and works in Mumbai ( India ).
